Key Outcomes

  • Green-fields microservices platform leveraging a service mesh and progressive container based technology stack.
  • One of the 1st implementations of Kubernetes and Service Mesh technologies for an Australian financial services organisation.
  • Reduced reliance on COTS products and Managed Service vendors to build, run and enhance their core systems.

Overview

We have worked with a large Australian financial institution to replace an ageing integration platform supporting up to 200 enterprise service operations, with a modern, progressive container based technology stack.

The Challenges

Our client traditionally relied heavily on COTS products and Managed Service vendors to build, run and enhance their core systems. With the existing integration technology stack and data centre reaching end of life it provided the opportunity to refresh the technology landscape and more importantly improve the customer experience leveraging Digital Channels.

The Solution

We completed a greenfields design, build and ongoing support of a new Microservices API platform which included service mesh technologies (Istio) that increased the resilience of the solution whilst reducing development effort and complexity. Kubernetes (Kops) running on AWS infrastructure provided the main deployment target for the new platform. We have incorporated CI/CD techniques using GitOps and Weave Flux to reduce its dependence on traditional, integrated systems testing phases. We have also implemented logging using Prometheus and Grafana for time-series metrics, and Jaeger for distributed tracing support.

The Outcomes

The new technology stack delivered allowed our client to successfully replace a number of core banking services whilst also reducing its dependence on traditional COTS products and managed service vendors to build, run and enhance these services. The solution was one of the earliest implementations of Kubernetes and Service Mesh technologies for an Australian financial services organisation.
