Refreshing legacy systems for the road ahead
Austroads is a not-for-profit organisation that provides advice, tools, and services to Australian and New Zealand transport agencies to improve safety, reliability, and efficient operation across borders.
Austroads’ legacy system is struggling to keep pace with the increasing volume and complexity of data, hindering its ability to derive insights and make informed decisions. It processes over a billion records annually, and the number of vehicles it monitors is projected to reach around 90,000 within a few years. Austroads wants to use advanced analytics and machine learning techniques to gain a better understanding of transportation patterns, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions to improve services. However, its existing SQL database infrastructure cannot support this.
Delays in data processing, inaccuracies, and limited data capabilities contribute to these challenges. In addition, the vast majority of the data it handles comes from third parties, introducing specific challenges around consistency and accuracy.
“Mantel Group’s extensive experience in data and AI gave us confidence that automation would be at the heart of their solution, from the ingestion and validation processes to the infrastructure itself.”
Dr. Payam Ghadirian
Head of data and analytics, Austroads
A more efficient route with Databricks
Austroads has partnered with Mantel Group to modernise its infrastructure and unlock the full potential of its data, leveraging Databricks as the core technology. The project commenced in April 2024 with Mantel Group, an Elite-status Databricks partner, providing technical design, data governance and quality, and supporting Austroads with uplifting the capability of its in-house team.
Already, Mantel Group and Austroads have worked together to implement over 70 validation rules to ensure data accuracy; for example, instances where data from a service provider incorrectly placed the same truck in two cities at nearly the same time due to an error in the time frame provided.
Automation driving improved business outcomes
Automation is at the heart of the ongoing program of work, from the ingestion and validation processes to the infrastructure itself, with the implementation of advanced tools like continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) and Terraform.
These efforts will help Austroads process data faster, with more accuracy and efficiency. And, strengthened customer relationships will result from delivering better services to Austroads’ customers, including state transport departments.
