Recruit

After graduating from University in 2019, Rachel wasn’t sure which path she wanted to down.

So she decided to do an online UX/UI Design Bootcamp at General Assembly. She then chose to do the 6 month immersive Software Engineering Bootcamp. 

This is where she found her love for coding and design and wanted to find a career where should do both. She then heard about Mantel Group and the traineeship program and she knew she had to apply.

Grow & Develop

After talking to Kerry during the recruitment process, Rachel was given the opportunity to work in the Cloud Stream in the traineeship program. 

This was an incredible opportunity for her as she had never really heard of cloud or worked in it.

Being in the traineeship program in the Cloud Stream was an amazing learning experience, not only was Rachel guided by her fellow mentors on what Cloud is and how to use it, she was giving the opportunity to work with the cloud herself and come up with ideas to showcase to the team. 

Now

After the traineeship program ended, she was assigned to an internal project in CMD called MoveCMD. This was a great introduction to a real world cloud experience.

She was asked to be part of this project as she could help out with the UX/UI front end development but also get an insight into cloud development and keep learning.

Now 6 months in, the MoveCMD team and Rachel are releasing a major update to MoveCMD which will help many Clients and Internal Staff. 

Rachel hopes to continue her work with MoveCMD as well as gain her Cloud Excellence Certification and Solutions Architect Certification from AWS.

After pursuing her sporting goals in her hockey career, Izzy Peskett spent her time studying Nutrition and Health Science.

In 2019 she realised her passion did not lie in health sciences and intended to study interaction design.

She enrolled in Coder Academy’s 6-month full-time web development bootcamp to get a hard skill before starting her Masters in Interaction Design. However, she fell in love with programming and via Coder Academy connected with Mantel Group to trial this career through the Traineeship.

In early 2020 Izzy took on a paid traineeship with our Associate Program.

During her 5 week traineeship (Unfortunately COVID-19 had just hit and the traineeship had to be discontinued) Izzy learnt from senior Mantel Group engineers about front end, back end and cloud engineering, agile delivery, testing and consulting approaches. 

She then worked on Mantel Group’s internal project where she developed real code in a safe environment while being mentored by a senior engineer.

Now

Although the traineeship ended early, Mantel continued to stay in contact with Izzy and in March 2021 was offered a full time position as an Associate Engineer.

Izzy is now placed at Moula, where she is working within a Mantel team to build an Android and iOS mobile application in React Native.

She has rapidly developed by doing real work and being mentored by senior engineers. So much so, Izzy was promoted at the start of September to a Base Engineer position.

12 years of experience as pastry chef.

Due to Covid in 2020, Colette learnt how to create a website to bring her business online. This experience has sparked Colette’s interest in Tech.

She decided quit her job and enrolled in web development program with Generation Australia. After graduation, Colette did some volunteer work with Code for Australia. During her job hunting process, She came across the Mantel Traineeship and secure a position in October 2021.

Grow & Develop

In August 2021, Colette has started in our 9 weeks Traineeship program in the Software Stream.

She got to explore the world of tech professionally here at Mantel Group: Front End, Back End, Containerisation, Agile working and more.

Throughout the traineeship program, she worked on the internal Mantel Connect application in React for front end, and Golang for backend.

Now

At the end of the traineeship program, Colette was offered an associate role with Digio.

She was on the bench for a few weeks to learn what she’s interested at that time. She decided to focus on Java and Spring-boot after chatting with Adrian (General manager of Digio). By end of Feb, Colette moved into API team with Streamotion and started her journey in the world of API!

After 13 years of working in the financial services industry, Lydia found herself at a crossroads. The work no longer sparked her interest, and she resolved to make a change. It was time to turn her passion for technology into a rewarding career.

Lydia signed up for a 10 month bootcamp at Coder Academy, delving into software development, cloud computing and cyber security, all while nurturing her two children through their own remote learning journey during the pandemic.

“I figured if I could debug an application while helping my youngest with spelling and my eldest regaled us with yet another rendition of ‘Hot Cross Buns’ on the flute, I could do anything.”

Grow & Develop

With her shiny new Diploma of IT, and a cloud computing certification for good measure, she applied for and was accepted into the Mantel Group Traineeship Program.

The first few weeks of training covered everything required to be an effective consultant, as well Mantel Group’s unique ways of working, with its flat structure and principle-based leadership.

“That was one of the things that appealed to me most about working at Mantel Group. Each person is empowered to make decisions. I would be treated like an adult, not micromanaged. It couldn’t be further from financial services in that regard.”

It was then time to get hands-on with GCP, Lydia’s chosen area of focus, building a data pipeline for an internal project.

“It seemed like an impossible task. I’d never worked with GCP before, never written any Terraform, and my fellow trainee and I had just a few short weeks to get it done and present our project to the wider Mantel Group team. But our mentors, the Senior Engineers guiding us through the project, were tremendous. They were patient, effective teachers, always there to guide us when we needed it. But they knew when to be hands-off, too, and let us struggle through a problem until we came up with a solution.”

The tail end of the traineeship program saw Lydia shadow a real client project, again working with Terraform, this time for electricity distributor Ausgrid.

Now

Upon completion of her traineeship, Lydia was offered a role as an Associate Cloud Engineer in the Google Cloud team. She has since worked with Qantas, IAG and Nexvia, and is currently working with retailer Temple & Webster to modernise their application and migrate to the cloud leveraging Google Kubernetes Engine. Just a year after starting her traineeship, her dedication and tenacity were rewarded with a promotion to base Cloud Engineer.

“I’ll always wish I’d started in this industry years earlier than I did, but I can’t regret any of my past career choices. Each of them helped me build the skills I use in my role every day: communication, problem solving, adaptability. I do feel immensely lucky to have gotten my start in tech at Mantel Group, who go to great lengths to foster a welcoming, inclusive environment. Because now I can build cloud infrastructure with the best of them. And in my breaks, I still get to listen to my kid’s music. But now she plays Beethoven.”

Catie had worked as a Registered Nurse for 8 years in various roles around Australia and the USA including working as a nurse in Melbourne during the height of the pandemic.

At the tail end of the Covid lockdowns Catie started feeling the urge to try something new. Fueled by curiousity, She enrolled in a basic front-end coding course under the pretence of “learning a new skill during the pandemic” but in reality, she had always found coding and the technology field interesting but never knew how to make the jump and was unsure if she would be successful.

Upon completing her coding course she realized how much she enjoyed thinking analytically and even loved the challenge of learning a new skill. This ignited a fire- and there was no better time to try and pursue a new career in technology. Knowing there was still so much more to learn, Catie sought an internship to solidify her foundational learning. This eventually led her to finding Mantel Group’s Traineeship Program.

Catie applied in mid 2022 and was accepted to learn Cloud Engineering in Mantel’s paid traineeship program.

Grow & Develop

During the 12 week program Catie was immersed in Cloud engineering, particularly with Google Cloud Platform. Catie had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from real Cloud Engineers with years of experience. Not only did she learn Cloud Engineering but through the traineeship’s [(Mantel Academy (? I cant remember if this is the official name? It was the daily learning sessions we had in the beginning of the program)] she developed skills in Agile Delivery, Backend Development and Data Engineering.

With the help of her fellow cloud engineer trainee and Engineering Mentors she also worked on a real internal project helping to deliver a client accelerator offering and presented it to the wider Mantel community.

Now

At the end of the traineeship Catie was offered a full time position as an Associate Cloud Engineer where she continued to develop her Cloud Engineering skills.  Despite the traineeship program ending, her learning never did. Mantel’s open and nurturing environment allowed Catie the space to continue developing her technology skills including with Terraform, Python and even data.

Catie has since been promoted to a Base Google Cloud Engineer at Mantel Group and has worked with various clients such as Ramsay Healthcare, Insignia Financial and Unisuper helping to migrate businesses to the cloud or build a cloud platform on Google from scratch.
